Suspects Charged with Trafficking Heroin
Lancaster, SC (Monday February 10, 2014) –On Wednesday February 5th the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office began a joint investigation with Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department regarding illegal drug activity. During that investigation Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Drug Agents and Agents from the State Law Enforcement Division(SLED) conducted surveillance at a Harrisburg Rd. residence. Investigators observed the suspects Joseph Shawn Chasteen and Cody Howard leave the residence. Knowing that Chasteen did not have a valid license,investigators conducted a traffic stop on him on Harrisburg Rd.
During the stop, investigators located approximately 4 lbs. of Heroin, a sawed off shotgun, a small amount of marijuana, balloons filled with heroin, scales, plastic bags, and a vacuum sealer. Investigators also seized the vehicle (1993 Honda Accord LX) that Chasteen was driving. The heroin seized during the incident has an estimated street value of approximately $400,000. Both Chasteen and Howard were arrested and transported to the Lancaster County Detention Center and jailed. Both have been charged with Trafficking Heroin, Possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and Possession of Marijuana. Bond has been denied for Chasteen and Howard.

The inter agency cooperation in this case was a big reason for its success and I am thankful for that cooperation and hard work. In my career here at the Sheriff’s Office I cannot remember another drug case of this magnitude ever being made. Job Well Done.”
